Chapter 14
Bravery's Secret
Jackson reflects on the moments he felt a flicker of fear, but pushed through. He understands that true bravery isn't the absence of fear, but acting despite it.
Jackson sat on the mossy bank of the Giggling Stream, the Glimmering Gem nestled warm and bright in his small hand. The gentle murmur of the water, once a playful challenge, now sounded like a lullaby, a soft accompaniment to his thoughts. He traced the smooth, cool surface of the gem, its light pulsing with a steady, comforting rhythm. It was beautiful, more beautiful than any story had described, but as he looked at it, a different kind of beauty bloomed within him – a quiet understanding, a gentle blossoming of courage.
He remembered the moment he first heard the legend of the Glimmering Gem, his eyes wide with wonder, his heart already alight with the promise of adventure. The Whispering Woods had seemed so vast, so full of unknown wonders and perhaps, he admitted to himself now, a little bit of mystery that felt like a tiny knot of nerves in his tummy. He hadn't told anyone about that little knot, not even his mum or dad. He’d just taken a deep breath, like he always did when he needed to be brave, and stepped onto the path.
The Giggling Stream had been his first real test. It had bubbled and chuckled, its water splashing playfully at his feet, almost as if it were trying to trip him. He’d felt a tickle of unease, a fleeting thought of turning back, of returning to the familiar safety of his garden. But then he’d seen the way the sunlight danced on the water, the way the pebbles beneath shimmered like tiny jewels, and the unease had melted away, replaced by a surge of curiosity. He’d splashed back, laughing with the stream, and the knot in his tummy had loosened, then disappeared altogether.
