A file that had been on his desk, perfectly organized, was now slightly askew. A cryptic email from an unknown sender, filled with nonsensical financial jargon that, upon closer inspection, contained a single, chilling phrase: *“Some books are best left closed.”*
He tried to shake it off. Corporate life was a pressure cooker, and stress could play tricks on the mind. But the ledger, tucked away in his briefcase, felt like a warm stone against his thigh, a constant reminder of the impossible truth he’d unearthed. The numbers, once a source of exhilaration, now seemed to whisper warnings.
During a routine quarterly review meeting, Elias found himself the subject of an unusual amount of attention. Mr. Silas Blackwood, a man whose silver hair and impeccably tailored suits exuded an aura of quiet power, had made a surprise appearance. Blackwood, a name Elias recognized from hushed conversations about major corporate buyouts and influential board appointments, usually operated far above the heads of junior analysts.
