He felt the wind whip past him, a hot, acrid breath, and then the jarring impact as his shoulder slammed against a rough brick wall. Pain, sharp and immediate, bloomed through him, but it was dwarfed by the deafening roar of the truck as it careened past, missing him by mere inches.

He scrambled to his feet, heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The truck, a hulking silhouette against the neon glow of the city night, vanished around a corner, leaving behind only the lingering stench of burnt rubber and a profound, chilling silence.
