Chapter 4
A Chasm of Misunderstanding
Devastated by the perceived deception, Arthur withdraws. Awkward encounters and comical misinterpretations abound as he grapples with Seraphina's hidden noble life, feeling like an imposter.
Arthur’s stomach churned, a sensation far more unpleasant than any he’d experienced from an empty belly. He replayed the scene in his mind, each replay a fresh stab of betrayal. Seraphina, his Seraphina, who’d always spoken of simple joys and shared meals of broth and bread, lived in a world of… this. The hidden manor, a place so grand it made the royal palace look like a shed, had thrown his entire reality into disarray. It wasn't just a house; it was a statement. A statement that whispered, "You, Arthur, are not enough."
He’d fled, a phantom in the twilight, leaving behind the echoes of shocked servants and the lingering scent of opulence that clung to him like a cheap perfume. Back in his modest lodgings, the worn blanket felt like a shroud, and the familiar creak of his floorboards sounded like a judgment. How could she? How could she have looked him in the eye, shared his meager meals, and never breathed a word of this gilded cage? He pictured her elegant hands, which he’d held so tenderly, now accustomed to the touch of silken gowns and jeweled goblets. It was too much.
The next few days were a blur of awkwardness and a profound, aching silence. He avoided the usual meeting spots, the little park bench where they’d shared stolen kisses, the baker’s shop where he’d splurged on a single pastry to share. He couldn’t bear to see her, to see the lie reflected in her eyes. Or, worse, to see pity. He was a proud man, despite his empty pockets. The thought of her looking at him with that gentle, knowing gaze she’d had when he’d confessed his worries about rent, but now tinged with the knowledge of her vast wealth, made him feel like a performing flea.
