Detective Evans leaned back in his worn leather chair, the springs groaning in protest. The man across from him, Rome, was a storm brewing, his dark eyes flashing with a mixture of anger and a carefully concealed panic. The air in the small, sterile interrogation room felt thick, charged with unspoken accusations. Rome had been brought in again, this time not for questioning about Reka’s disappearance, but for something far more concrete. The anonymous tips, the carefully pieced-together timelines, the hushed conversations with those who had once been too afraid to speak – it all pointed to him.

“We’ve been over this, Detective,” Rome’s voice was a low growl, laced with a practiced weariness. He’d perfected the art of feigned indifference, a mask he’d worn for so long it had become part of his skin. “Reka left. She walked out. I don’t know where she is, and frankly, I’m tired of being dragged down here like I’m some kind of criminal.”

Detective Evans steepled his fingers, his gaze steady, unflinching. He’d seen this play out before, the bluster, the denial, the desperate attempt to control the narrative. But this time, the pieces fit too perfectly. “Mr. Johnson,” he began, his voice calm but firm, “we’re not here about Reka leaving. We’re here about what happened before she left.”
