Chapter 14
Rome's Desperation
Rome's resources dwindle. His anger turns to desperation as he employs increasingly shady tactics to find Reka, crossing legal and moral boundaries in his obsessive pursuit.
The silence in the house had become a physical entity, pressing in on Rome from all sides. It wasn't the quiet of peace, but the suffocating stillness of absence, a void where Reka used to be. He’d ripped through their shared life, tearing apart closets, sifting through drawers, his breath coming in ragged gasps as if he were drowning. Yet, she was nowhere. The scent of her – a faint whisper of lavender and something earthy, something uniquely *her* – had long since faded, leaving behind only the sterile, accusing smell of emptiness.
He’d called everyone. Her sister, who’d offered clipped, unhelpful responses, her voice laced with an unusual frostiness. Her few friends, their answers ranging from feigned ignorance to outright hostility. Even acquaintances he barely knew had adopted a peculiar, unified front of polite bewilderment. His initial agitation had curdled into a gnawing rage. How dare she? After seventeen years, after everything he’d… done for her, for them, she’d just *left*. Without a word, without a trace. He paced the living room, the Persian rug a blur beneath his expensive loafers. He remembered the day she’d left, the casual way she’d walked out the door, her shoulders squared, a posture he hadn't seen from her in years. He’d dismissed it then, a flicker of annoyance at her sudden independence, but now, it was a searing indictment.
