Detective Evans stood on Reka’s porch, the chipped paint mirroring the fractured state of his own patience. He’d been here before, a week ago, the air thick with Rome’s carefully constructed indifference. Today, the air felt different, thinner, stretched taut with an unspoken tension. Rome opened the door, his usual swagger replaced by a restless energy, his eyes darting past Evans, as if expecting someone else.

“Detective,” Rome said, his voice a low growl that lacked its usual practiced charm. “Back again?”

“Just following up, Mr. Hayes,” Evans replied, stepping inside without invitation. The house, once a monument to their seventeen years together, now felt hollow, the silence amplifying the ticking of an unseen clock. He scanned the living room, the same meticulously arranged furniture, the same expensive art on the walls. Yet, something was off. A faint scent of bleach, stronger than before, hung in the air, and a single framed photograph on the mantelpiece was slightly askew, as if recently moved.
