The little square of dried grass, taped precariously to the gleaming white enamel of their refrigerator door, was a most unlikely memento. It was rough to the touch, brittle, and undeniably ordinary. Yet, for Maya and her soon-to-be husband, it was a treasure beyond measure. It was a symbol, a testament, a tiny, golden reminder of how their entire love story had begun, not with grand gestures or eloquent declarations, but with a simple, accidental typo and a whole lot of hay.
Maya often found herself staring at it, a soft smile playing on her lips as she waited for the kettle to boil, or reached for the milk. It was the first thing people noticed when they visited, that solitary piece of straw clinging stubbornly to the fridge. And every single time, without fail, the question would come, usually accompanied by a raised eyebrow.
“What on earth is that?” their friends would ask, pointing.
