Chapter 10
The Fridge's Cherished Relic
Back in their shared space, a small piece of hay, carefully preserved, is taped to their fridge. It’s a constant, humble reminder of the day their love story took a uniquely 'hay'-themed turn.
The fridge hummed its low, contented song, a familiar soundtrack to their kitchen. It was a sturdy, white appliance, unpretentious and reliable, much like the man Maya had chosen to share her life with. And there, taped just above the vegetable crisper, was the relic. A single, unassuming piece of dried grass, its golden hue faded slightly with time, its texture a whisper against Maya’s fingertip. It was an absurd thing to cherish, really, this bit of farm detritus. Yet, it held more weight than any diamond, more sparkle than any gemstone. It was the genesis of their story, the accidental punctuation mark that had led to a lifetime of happily ever after.
Maya traced the outline of the hay. It had been haphazardly taped there, the sticky side of the tape a little too prominent, a testament to the sheer, giddy excitement of that day. She remembered the way her heart had thrummed against her ribs, a frantic hummingbird trapped in a cage, as he’d fumbled with the velvet box, his palms slick with a nervousness that mirrored her own. The hay had been everywhere, clinging to his trousers, dusting his shirt, a fragrant, rustic halo around his earnest face. He’d brushed it off his knees, a sheepish grin playing on his lips, and then he’d asked the question.
“Hay there, my love,” he’d said, his voice a little rough around the edges, and the world had tilted on its axis, settling into a perfect, hay-scented alignment.
