The quiet hum of the sanctuary, usually a balm to my soul, felt different these days. It was a silence laced with unspoken questions, a stillness that seemed to hold its breath, waiting. I sat in my study, the afternoon sun slanting through the tall windows, painting stripes of light across the worn theological texts that lined the walls. He saw himself as the logical successor, the one equipped by skill and experience to guide us forward. And perhaps, in a human sense, he was. But God’s ways are not our ways, and His choices are not always dictated by earthly merit or perceived entitlement.
