The air crackled with a tension so thick it felt like a physical weight pressing down on me. Luke, his face a mask of righteous fury, stood before us, a silver stake glinting in his hand, aimed squarely at Marcine’s heart. My own heart, now a powerful, relentless drumbeat in my chest, thrummed with a primal protectiveness that surged through every fiber of my being. Fear, a distant echo of my human days, was drowned out by a roaring tide of something far more potent.

“Stay away from her, Luke,” I growled, the sound deeper, rougher than I’d ever heard it before. My fangs, sharp and new, a constant reminder of the transformation that had irrevocably bound me to Marcine, felt impossibly long.

Luke’s eyes, hard and cold, flickered between Marcine and me. He saw the change in me, the nascent darkness that had bloomed within. But he didn’t understand. He saw a boy playing at being a monster, not the creature I had become, not the creature we were. “You think you can protect her, boy? You’ve only condemned yourself. You’re an abomination, just like her.”
