The storm's relentless assault had finally abated, leaving behind a world washed clean and eerily silent. Leo, shivering and salt-crusted, stumbled through the dense undergrowth, each twig snapping like a tiny, accusing finger. His clothes, once bright for the camping adventure, were now torn and muddy, clinging to him like a second, sodden skin. The forest, which had seemed so full of wonder just hours before, now loomed, a labyrinth of shadows and whispers. He called out again, his voice a thin thread against the vastness, "Dad? Mom?" Only the dripping of leaves answered.

His stomach growled, a hollow ache that mirrored the emptiness he felt in his heart. He’d thought about his dad all day, about the way his father’s hands, usually so strong and capable, felt rough when he’d patted Leo’s shoulder. He remembered his father’s quiet strength, the way he always seemed to know what to do, even when things were tough. Proverbs his father often quoted, words of wisdom that had once seemed like just old sayings, now echoed in Leo’s mind like guiding stars. *“The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every aspect of their lives.”* (Psalm 37:23). He clung to that thought, to the idea that even in this lostness, there might be a divine hand at play.

He pushed aside a curtain of dripping ferns, his eyes scanning the dense woods. Every rustle, every distant hoot of an owl, sent a fresh wave of fear through him. He remembered his father’s promise, made just before they’d left for the trip, his voice low and serious. "Leo, no matter what happens, no matter how far you think you've strayed, remember this: my love for you is like a mountain. It doesn't move. It's always there, steadfast and strong." Leo had nodded, but the words hadn’t quite settled in his heart, not really. Now, lost and alone, they felt like a lifeline, a flicker of warmth in the chilling dampness.
