Jasper's Watch

The afternoon sun, usually a warm, welcome guest in Elara’s small cottage, felt thin and watery today. It cast long, distorted shadows across the worn floorboards, shadows that seemed to writhe and stretch like uneasy thoughts. Elara sat by the window, her knitting needles a blur of motion, but her gaze was fixed not on the intricate cable pattern unfolding in her lap, but on the street outside. A knot of unease, tight and persistent, had taken root in her chest since yesterday.

Jasper, usually a languid sprawl of ginger fur across the hearth rug, was unusually alert. He sat perched on the windowsill, his tail giving a low, rhythmic thump against the glass. His emerald eyes, normally soft and dreamy, were narrowed, fixed on something Elara couldn’t quite discern. He’d been like this for the past hour, a silent sentinel, his ears swiveling at the slightest sound.
