Professor Finch’s study, usually a comforting chaos of overflowing bookshelves and ancient maps, felt charged with a nervous energy. The air, thick with the scent of old paper and pipe tobacco, seemed to hum with unspoken urgency. Elias sat across from the Professor, the Serpent’s Balance Sheet resting on the worn mahogany desk between them, its cryptic symbols seeming to pulse with a life of their own. Seraphina’s threat still echoed in Elias’s mind – a chilling promise of consequences if he dared to expose them.

“They know, Elias,” Professor Finch said, his voice low and gravelly, the usual twinkle in his eye replaced by a grim resolve. He tapped a gnarled finger on the ledger. “This… this is more than just a tool for them. It’s their legacy. And they will protect it with everything they have.”

Elias’s stomach clenched. He had suspected as much, but hearing it from the Professor, who had dedicated his life to history’s forgotten corners, made the danger feel terrifyingly real. “What do we do? We can’t just… hide. Not when they’re planning something like this.” He gestured vaguely, the recent market tremors and the ledger’s unsettling predictions a constant, gnawing worry.
