The air in Elias’s small apartment crackled with an energy that had nothing to do with the sputtering fluorescent light above. It was the hum of danger, a low thrum that vibrated in his bones, a feeling he’d come to associate with Silas Blackwood. He’d known it was coming, of course. The ledger, with its chillingly accurate predictions, had been a beacon, drawing the shadowy organization closer with every page he turned. And now, the shadow had solidified, coalescing into the formidable figure standing across from him.
Silas Blackwood. The name itself felt heavy, like a lead weight settling in Elias’s stomach. Blackwood was the embodiment of the organization, the face of the Algorithmic Shadow that had manipulated markets and lives for centuries. He was impeccably dressed, as always, his dark suit a stark contrast to the worn furniture and piles of research papers that littered Elias’s living space. His eyes, sharp and intelligent, held a glint of amusement, as if observing a particularly interesting specimen under a microscope.
“Mr. Thorne,” Blackwood’s voice was smooth, a silken whisper that belied the steel beneath. “I must commend you. Your… enthusiasm for uncovering the past is admirable. Though, perhaps a touch misguided.”
