The scent of old paper and something faintly medicinal always clung to Dr. Thorne’s office, a comforting aroma that had once signified safety. Now, it felt like a fragile barrier, a bulwark against the swirling chaos that had begun to consume my nights and, increasingly, my days. I clutched my worn leather satchel, the familiar weight doing little to anchor me. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner was a metronome, counting out the seconds of my unraveling sanity.

Dr. Thorne, his kind eyes crinkling at the corners, leaned forward in his chair. The late afternoon sun, slanting through the tall window, illuminated the dust motes dancing in the air between us, each one a tiny, ephemeral world. He had been my psychology professor years ago, a man whose lectures on the human mind had always felt both profound and accessible. Now, he was my last, desperate hope for a tether to reality.

“So, Elara,” he began, his voice a low, steady rumble, “you’ve been having… vivid dreams?”
