The air in the narrow alley, usually thick with the scent of damp brick and forgotten dreams, now hummed with an unspoken tension. Celeste, her fingers still smudged with charcoal and the vibrant ochre of a sunset she’d captured on a peeling shutter, found Pip not in his usual corner, where the wilting roses of his painted smile always seemed to droop a little lower, but near the edge of the market square, his shoulders hunched as if carrying the weight of the world’s forgotten sighs. She had followed the subtle shift in his energy, a tremor in the usual rhythm of his melancholy, a discord that resonated with the unease that had been growing within her since Silas’s thinly veiled insinuations.

“Pip?” Her voice, usually as bright as the midday sun, was muted, a soft inquiry that seemed to hover in the space between them.

He started, his wide, painted eyes blinking rapidly, as if emerging from a deep, shadowed dream. The clown, usually so adept at masking his inner turmoil with practiced gestures and exaggerated expressions, looked utterly exposed. The red of his smile seemed to bleed into the white of his face, a stark contrast to the grey pallor of his skin.
