The heavy oak door creaked open, a sound like a weary sigh from the house itself. Leo, Maya, and Sam stood on the threshold, their flashlights cutting shaky beams through the dusty air. They had done it. They had outrun the older kids, their pounding footsteps a fading echo in the overgrown gardens. Now, the real mystery beckoned, deeper within the silent, waiting rooms of the abandoned manor.

"Wow," breathed Sam, his usual boisterous energy momentarily subdued by the sheer stillness. "It’s… quiet."

Maya nodded, her flashlight beam sweeping over peeling wallpaper and cobweb-draped furniture. "Too quiet, almost. Like it’s holding its breath." Her voice was a little softer than usual, and Leo noticed the slight tremor in her hand as she adjusted her grip on her flashlight. He understood. Even with their pursuers gone, the darkness held its own kind of fear.
