The forest had a way of holding its breath, of muffling the world with a thick, verdant silence that pressed in on all sides. It was the kind of quiet that made you acutely aware of your own heartbeat, of the rustle of your cloak, of the soft tread of your boots on the mossy earth. We had been traveling for days, the air thick with unspoken things, with the lingering scent of pine and damp soil. Maya walked beside me, her usual bright chatter subdued, a thoughtful frown etched between her brows. Drake, ever the sentinel, kept a steady pace a few steps ahead, his gaze sweeping the dense canopy. Bowen, of course, was a constant presence, his movements fluid and economical, his eyes missing nothing.

We had stopped for a brief respite by a small, gurgling stream, its water so clear you could count the smooth, grey pebbles on its bed. The sunlight, fractured by the leaves, dappled the water in shifting patterns of gold. I watched a dragonfly, its wings a blur of iridescent blue, hover over a patch of wild mint. It was moments like these, so fragile and fleeting, that made the ache in my chest – a longing for a home I might never see again, a yearning for a life that felt impossibly distant – almost unbearable.

Maya nudged me gently with her elbow, her eyes soft. "You're quiet today, Marlee."
