The scent of woodsmoke clung to the air, a comforting, earthy perfume that had become as familiar to me as the sting of antiseptic from my own world. I traced the rough grain of the wooden table with a fingertip, the memory of my pristine, sterile hospital room feeling like a dream, a fading echo. Bowen sat across from me, his gaze steady, the midday sun catching the flecks of gold in his eyes. He’d explained the legend of the Echo Shard, a relic whispered about in hushed tones, a key to unlocking pathways between worlds. It was a desperate hope, a fragile thread, but it was all I had.
“You’re sure about this?” he asked, his voice low, a rumble of concern that resonated deep within me.
I nodded, a knot of apprehension tightening in my chest. “I have to be. There’s no other way for me to get home.” The words felt hollow, even to me. Home. The word itself seemed to shimmer and distort, no longer the solid, undeniable reality it once was. This world, with its untamed beauty and its inherent danger, was slowly, insidiously, weaving itself into my very being.
