The air in Elara’s secluded dwelling hummed with an ancient energy, a stark contrast to the rushed, utilitarian spaces Alex had grown accustomed to. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight piercing the gloom, illuminating shelves crammed with peculiar artifacts and scrolls brittle with age. Alex, still reeling from the revelation at the village and the weight of Barty’s quiet desperation, felt a tremor of uncertainty ripple through them. Elara, seated on a low stool polished smooth by generations of use, watched Alex with eyes that seemed to hold the wisdom of centuries. The scent of dried herbs and something akin to old parchment hung heavy in the air, a perfume of forgotten knowledge.

“You carry a heavy burden, Alex,” Elara’s voice, a low murmur like pebbles shifting in a stream, broke the silence. “The weight of a choice made, and the specter of what might have been.”

Alex’s gaze flickered from the intricate carvings on the wooden table between them to Elara’s serene face. “Barty… his people… they are in such dire straits. I thought the treasure was gold, jewels. Something to lift them, and me, out of the mire.” A sigh escaped Alex’s lips, a soft exhalation of disappointment. “But the legend… it’s not about riches, is it?”
