The air in the village of Oakhaven hung thick with a desperation Alex had only ever witnessed in hushed news reports. The treasure, the very reason for this arduous journey, felt distant, almost frivolous, in the face of such widespread suffering.

Barty Thorne, his face a roadmap of worry etched deeper by the harsh sun, stood before Alex, his arms crossed. His earlier gruffness had softened, replaced by a weariness that spoke volumes. “You see now,” he said, his voice rough but devoid of its usual bark. “This isn’t some game of hide-and-seek for trinkets. This is survival.”

Alex’s gaze swept over the meager crops, the patched-up tools, the children with eyes far too old for their years. The map, once a beacon of hope, now felt like a heavy burden. Elara, who had appeared as if conjured from the very shadows of the ancient forest, stood a little apart, her expression unreadable.
