Confrontation and Capture
Miles finds Sarah, but they are cornered by Sheriff Brody and the mayor. A tense standoff ensues, exposing their true motives and Sarah's ordeal.
The air in the abandoned chapel was thick with the scent of damp earth and forgotten prayers. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight piercing the shattered stained-glass window, illuminating the skeletal remains of pews and an altar draped in cobwebs. Miles’s heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic rhythm that echoed the desperate pulse of his hope. He’d followed Sarah’s final breadcrumb, a faded inscription on a crumbling gravestone, to this desolate place, a sanctuary of the lost and the forgotten.
And there she was.
Not a ghost, not a phantom conjured by his guilt-ridden mind, but flesh and blood. Huddled in the deepest shadow, a figure emerged, tentative at first, then with a surge of undeniable recognition. Sarah. Her face was thinner, etched with a weariness that Miles had never known, but her eyes, those same intelligent, defiant eyes he remembered, met his with a flicker of something akin to relief, and a deep, abiding sorrow.
