Miles felt it humming beneath his skin, a low thrum that mirrored the frantic pulse in his own chest. The abandoned mill, the cryptic symbols etched into the bark of ancient oaks, Eleanor Vance’s hushed pronouncements about forgotten pacts – it all pointed to a darkness that had festered in Oakhaven for generations, a darkness that had claimed Sarah.

His gaze drifted to the invitation lying on his worn desk, a stark white rectangle against the dark wood. Mayor Thompson’s annual summer gala. A gathering of the town’s elite, the very people Eleanor had alluded to with a shiver. The perfect opportunity. A desperate gambit, he admitted, but one he had to take. Sarah was still out there, a ghost in the machine of Oakhaven’s carefully constructed facade, and he was running out of time.

He traced the embossed lettering with a fingertip. Thompson. The name echoed with a hollow resonance, a reminder of the town’s ingrained power structures. Sheriff Brody, of course, would be there, a wolf in sheep’s clothing, his affable smile a mask for something far more predatory. Miles had seen that look in Brody’s eyes before, a glint of calculation that chilled him to the bone.
