Chapter 6
The Administrator's Gaze
Seraphina, a high-ranking Current administrator, detects the growing dissent. Her focus sharpens on Elara, seeing her as a potential threat to the grid's stability.
Seraphina traced the holographic projection of the global energy grid with a fingertip, her gaze sharp and unwavering. The Current, a pulsating web of light and data, hummed with an almost imperceptible thrum that resonated deep within her bones. For decades, she had been a custodian of this colossal organism, a guardian of humanity’s lifeline. Her life, her purpose, was etched into its very architecture. But lately, a disquieting dissonance had begun to creep into the symphony of energy flow. Anomalies, small at first, like static on a clear channel, had begun to appear with unsettling regularity.
She zoomed in on a particular section of the grid, the sector encompassing Elara’s city. The data streams here were usually as smooth and predictable as a lullaby. Yet, the recent flicker in Elara’s personal energy supply, logged as a minor fluctuation, had snagged Seraphina’s attention. It was an insignificant blip to most, an oversight easily dismissed. But Seraphina saw patterns where others saw chance. She saw the subtle tremors that preceded an earthquake.
“Report on Sector Gamma-7 anomalies,” Seraphina’s voice, cool and precise, cut through the sterile quiet of her command center. A subordinate, a young man with eyes perpetually glued to his data slate, responded instantly.
