Elara’s breath hitched, a tiny, involuntary gasp swallowed by the hum of the city. It wasn’t the usual, comforting thrum of the Current, the invisible, life-giving pulse that permeated every dwelling, every streetlamp, every nanobot cleaning the air. This was different. It was a tremor, a subtle hiccup in the steady flow of energy that had always defined her existence. Her personal chrono-display, usually a crisp blue, flickered, then stabilized, but the unease lingered, a cold knot in her stomach. She’d heard whispers, of course, hushed conversations in the communal plazas, fragmented data streams that never made it to the public feeds. Anomalies. They called them anomalies. But this felt… personal. A momentary lapse in the omnipotent Current, and it had pricked a raw nerve she hadn't known existed.

She dismissed it, or tried to, attributing it to a faulty conduit in her sector, a minor glitch in the grand, flawless design. But the memory of that flicker, the unsettling silence that had briefly descended, clung to her like static. The city, usually a symphony of directed light and controlled movement, seemed to hold its breath with her. The ubiquitous drones, their optical sensors glowing with perpetual vigilance, continued their silent patrols, but even their movements seemed to carry a hint of hesitation.

Days bled into weeks, and the anomalies, though still rare, became more frequent. Not just in her apartment, but across the sector. Streetlights sputtered, public transport systems experienced momentary shutdowns, and the ever-present ambient music, piped directly into consciousness through the Current, would occasionally stutter, leaving an unnerving void. Panic, a sensation Elara had only encountered in historical simulations, began to ripple through the populace. The Current was absolute. It was survival. Any deviation was an existential threat.
