The acrid tang of ozone and the lingering scent of burnt metal were Will’s perfume. He’d spent another sleepless night hunched over his console, the glow of the monitor painting his gaunt face in sickly blues and greens. His apartment, a testament to his dedication to the digital realm, was a chaotic symphony of empty energy drink cans, discarded snack wrappers, and tangled charging cables. The real world, with its mundane demands for rent and sustenance, was a distant, annoying hum beneath the exhilarating roar of mechs clashing in the virtual arena.

He’d just finished a particularly lucrative, albeit ethically dubious, sale. A hulking, obsidian-plated brute of a mech, fashioned from a stolen blueprint and a healthy dose of wishful thinking, had fetched him a tidy sum from a rather gruff individual with a penchant for intimidating nicknames. “The Bone Crusher,” the buyer had grunted, his avatar a towering, menacing figure. Will had practically vibrated with glee as the credits flooded his account. More money meant more rare materials, more experimental designs, and, most importantly, more chances to stumble upon another Vanguard blueprint. That fleeting, heart-stopping moment in the forgotten dungeon, when the ethereal glow of the Vanguard schematic had pulsed before his eyes, was a memory he savored like a fine, illicit wine. He’d nearly been pulverized by a horde of grotesque, multi-limbed monstrosities, but the reward… oh, the reward had been worth every near-death shriek.

He stretched, his joints protesting with a series of pops and cracks that echoed in the quiet apartment. His stomach rumbled, a mournful sound that reminded him of his neglected biological needs. “Right, sustenance,” he muttered, his voice raspy from disuse. He rummaged through a drawer, unearthing a half-eaten bag of stale chips. As he crunched down, his gaze fell upon a notification blinking insistently on his secondary monitor. It wasn’t a buyer, nor a guild invitation. It was a message from an unknown sender, bearing a peculiar symbol: a stylized cogwheel interwoven with a serpent.
