The emerald spires of Aeridor receded behind them, shimmering like a mirage against the stark, white canvas of the northern plains. Elara pulled her fur cloak tighter, the wind, once a gentle messenger, now carried a sharper bite, hinting at the wilder territories that lay ahead. Beside her, Finn whistled a jaunty, if slightly off-key, tune, his breath pluming in the frigid air. Kael, ever the scholar, consulted a brittle, star-charted scroll, his brow furrowed in concentration.
“The texts speak of this place as the Celestial Sea,” Kael murmured, his voice barely audible above the wind’s lament. “A realm where the sky touches the earth, and the veil between worlds grows thin.”
Elara shivered, though not entirely from the cold. There was a palpable shift in the air, a prickling sensation that made the hairs on her arms stand on end. The aurora, which had been a vibrant, dancing spectacle above Aeridor, now seemed to stretch and waver, its colours bleeding into the twilight sky like spilled ink. “It feels… strange,” she admitted, her intuition humming a low, cautionary note.
