The late afternoon sun, a softened echo of its midday brilliance, slanted through the tall windows of the King’s private apartments. It dappled the elaborate marquetry of the floor and caught the dust motes dancing in the air, transforming them into a fleeting, golden snow. Louis, no longer the vibrant, impetuous youth who had once commanded these very rooms with such unbridled energy, sat by the hearth. The fire, though diligently tended by a nearby servant, offered more comfort than heat, a gentle reminder of the encroaching chill that seemed to seep not just from the stone walls, but from the very marrow of his bones. He held a book, its pages worn smooth with countless readings, but his gaze was fixed on the flames, lost in a landscape of memories.
A soft rustle of silk announced a presence, a sound so familiar, so unobtrusive, that it barely disturbed the King’s reverie. Françoise d’Aubigné, Madame de Maintenon, entered the chamber, her movements as graceful and silent as a shadow. She carried a small tray with a delicate porcelain cup, steaming gently. She did not speak, did not intrude upon his solitude, but simply moved towards him, her quiet dignity a balm in the often boisterous court.
“Your Majesty,” she said, her voice a low murmur, like the distant sigh of the wind through the gardens. She placed the tray on a small table beside him. “A tisane. The physician suggested it might aid your rest.”
