“They call it the Franco-Dutch War, Colbert,” Louis’s voice was a low rumble, carrying the weight of his divine right. “A mere skirmish to remind these upstart merchants of their place. A necessary assertion of France’s rightful dominance.”

Jean-Baptiste Colbert, his face etched with the perpetual worry of a man tasked with balancing the King’s grand designs with the kingdom’s meager coffers, stood beside him, his posture stiff with deference and unease. “Your Majesty, the costs… they are considerable. The treasury strains under the weight of these… assertions.”
