The First Attempt

Guided by Felix's research, the group decides to confront the curse. They attempt a ritual, hoping to break its hold on Brykoon. However, their understanding is incomplete, and the ritual goes disastrously wrong.

The air in Felix’s cramped study was thick with the scent of old paper and something else, something vaguely metallic, like a storm brewing. Dust motes danced in the single beam of light slanting through the grimy window, illuminating stacks of books that threatened to spill onto the floor. John, his brow furrowed in concentration, traced a symbol in one of Felix’s ancient tomes with a trembling finger. Jack leaned against a towering bookshelf, his arms crossed, a familiar unease settling in his gut. Alex, ever restless, paced the small cleared space in the center of the room, his gaze darting between the others.

“Are you sure about this, Felix?” Jack’s voice was a low rumble, a counterpoint to the frantic scribbling of John’s pen. “This…ritual. It feels like we’re playing with fire.”

Felix, perched on a stool amidst the chaos, adjusted his spectacles. His eyes, usually bright with intellectual curiosity, held a flicker of something John couldn't quite place – apprehension, perhaps, or a grim resignation. “The texts are…unanimous, Jack. They speak of a binding, a severing. If the whispers are true, if this ‘shadow’ feeds on the town’s fear and disbelief, then a direct confrontation, a ritual meant to dispel it, is our only recourse.” He tapped a brittle page. “This passage, from the ‘Codex of Whispering Stones,’ describes a ceremony of ‘unmaking.’ It requires specific incantations, certain…offerings.”
