He heard the heavy tread of footsteps approaching, the familiar, steady rhythm of Jack’s walk. Jack, a man carved from practicality and solid earth, was John’s anchor in the swirling currents of his obsession. He entered the cramped space, his broad shoulders filling the doorway, and surveyed the scene with a familiar, weary sigh.
“Still digging, John?” Jack’s voice was a low rumble, laced with concern that he tried, and failed, to mask. He carried a worn canvas bag, its contents likely a thermos of coffee and a half-eaten sandwich.
