The weight of it all pressed down on me, a physical ache that settled deep in my bones. Each day was a performance, a carefully constructed facade of calm where I juggled the expectations of my peers, the whispers of the teachers, and the gnawing fear that clawed at my insides. They saw the effortless grace, the quicksilver mind, the way my powers seemed to bloom like a spring garden under the sun. They saw perfection, and they wanted it. Or perhaps, they wanted it gone.

My sanctuary, the one place I could breathe, was crumbling. The hushed tones that followed me down the corridors, the sidelong glances that lingered a moment too long – they were a constant reminder that the fragile peace I’d found was an illusion. My shyness, once a quiet part of me, now felt like a shield I desperately tried to wield, but it only seemed to draw more attention. When the stares became too much, I’d shrink, willing myself to become smaller, a shadow against the wall, a whisper in the wind. I’d pull my wings tighter, tuck my head down, and pray for invisibility.

Except for Flame. He saw me. He saw the real me, not the polished dragonet they’d conjured in their minds. Flame, the whirlwind of energy, the one who tripped over his own two feet in class but could outrun any of us on the training grounds. He was a paradox, a bull in a china shop with a surprisingly gentle heart. We’d started as unlikely allies, two outcasts in our own ways, but something had shifted. The easy laughter, the shared silences, the way his bright eyes would soften when he looked at me… it was a warmth I’d never known.
