Cole's network reports a missing hunter who was investigating the church anomaly. His last message: 'The church is here again.' A grim omen for Jennifer and Tara.
The hum of the laptop was a familiar counterpoint to the rhythmic beep of Jennifer’s heart monitor, a sound that had become as ingrained in her life as the taste of lukewarm coffee and the perpetual ache in her shoulders. She tapped a fingernail against the screen, the muted glow of the monitor reflecting in her tired eyes. Cole’s grim report sat open, a digital dossier of a new worry. Another hunter, one of his own, gone. Vanished. The only clue a garbled, desperate message: "The church is here again."
“He was good, Jen,” Cole’s voice crackled through the speakerphone, a low rumble of concern. “One of the best. Knew the woods like the back of his hand. He wouldn’t just… disappear.”
Jennifer leaned back, the worn leather of her desk chair groaning in protest. “But he did. And he was looking into *this*. The church.” She gestured vaguely at the blurry satellite images of the Pnoca region, a verdant sprawl of dense forest and the serpentine ribbon of the Buffalo River. The very place that had brought them here, the place where a phantom church seemed to materialize from the water’s embrace.
