It had been found tucked away in the lining of an old trunk, a trunk that had belonged to the woman her parents claimed was her birth mother, a woman who had died shortly after her birth. The locket held no photograph, only a tiny, almost invisible etching of a stylized falcon.

Anu, perched on the edge of a plush armchair, watched Natasha with a mixture of concern and a strange, burgeoning curiosity. She’d always felt a connection to Natasha, a sisterly bond forged in shared rooms and whispered secrets, but lately, the whispers had taken on a different hue, a darker, more insistent tone. The locket, discovered by Anu during a rare bout of tidying, had been the spark that ignited the growing embers of unease.

Across the room, Mr. Malhotra, his brow furrowed, examined the locket with a magnifying glass. His usual jovial demeanor had evaporated, replaced by a sharp, almost clinical focus. Mrs. Malhotra wrung her hands, her eyes darting between Natasha and her husband, a silent plea for reassurance hanging in the air.
