It was intricately carved, depicting a stylized phoenix with wings spread wide, a design she’d never seen before. Mrs. Malhotra had found it tucked away in an old jewelry box, a forgotten heirloom. But for Natasha, it was more. The moment her fingers brushed its surface, a faint tremor, like a distant echo, had run through her. She’d dismissed it as nerves, the lingering unease from the whispers that had begun to weave themselves into the tapestry of her life.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Mrs. Malhotra had said, her voice warm but laced with a hint of something unreadable. “I don’t recall who it belonged to, though. It’s been lost in the clutter for years.”

Lost. The word resonated with Natasha. She felt lost, adrift in a sea of comfort and privilege that didn’t quite feel her own. The locket, however, was a tangible anchor, a silent promise of a story yet to unfold. She’d spent hours tracing the phoenix’s elegant lines, a strange sense of familiarity stirring within her.
