It was a faded image, capturing a younger Mrs. Obroye, radiant and full of life, holding a baby swaddled in a delicate lace blanket. Beside it, a single, tarnished locket lay open, revealing a miniature portrait of a man with kind eyes and a stern jaw.

"It all points to the Obroyes," Mr. Malhotra finally said, his voice a low rumble. "The locket, the vague descriptions from the orphanage matron… and that peculiar birthmark on Natasha’s wrist. It matches the one described in the old family lore."

Mrs. Malhotra’s gaze drifted towards the closed door of Natasha’s room. Her adopted daughter, so graceful and seemingly content, was a world away from the poverty and uncertainty of her beginnings. Yet, the whispers of her past were growing louder, more insistent. The "first clue," the worn leather-bound journal discovered tucked away in a forgotten attic trunk, had been the catalyst. Its pages, filled with elegant script, spoke of a desperate plea, a child given away, and a promise of protection.
