The air, thick with the acrid tang of ozone and the lingering scent of charred flesh, began to thin. Kai’s sapphire inferno, a tempest of pure, incandescent sorrow and protective fury, receded not like a dying ember but like a tide pulled by an unseen, cosmic force. The clearing, once vibrant with the forest’s verdant breath, was now a canvas of desolation, painted in shades of ash and the spectral blue of residual flame. The brute, or what remained of it, was less a creature and more a memory etched into the scorched earth, a testament to the unleashed power that had surged through Kai.

His hands, still trembling, fell to his sides. The sapphire light that had blazed from his fingertips, a beacon of his anguish, flickered and died, leaving behind only the pallid glow of his skin, as if the very color had been leached away. He staggered, the weight of his actions pressing down on him, heavier than any physical burden. Ciaran lay closest to him, a crumpled form amidst the debris. Kai’s heart seized, a familiar, icy grip of dread. He fell to his knees, his sapphire eyes, now dulled by exhaustion and the returning tide of his own mental landscape, scrutinizing his youngest brother. Ciaran’s breaths were shallow, ragged gasps that tore at Kai’s soul. A thin trickle of blood, dark and viscous, stained the boy’s lips.
