The air in the town square vibrated with a nervous energy, a potent blend of sugar, ambition, and the faint scent of burnt crust. Tables, once meticulously arranged by Linda’s unwavering hand, now groaned under the weight of cakes, pies, and an assortment of baked goods that ranged from the sublime to the… well, the structurally suspect. Mayor Thompson, sporting a bowtie that seemed to be fighting a losing battle with his jowls, surveyed the scene with the proud, slightly bewildered air of a man who’d overseen a particularly ambitious potluck.

Linda, looking remarkably composed considering the culinary chaos unfolding around her, clutched a clipboard like a shield. Her eyes, usually sharp and focused, held a flicker of something softer as she watched Robert. He was, as usual, a whirlwind of well-intentioned disaster. He’d just managed to knock over a display of miniature éclairs with a stray elbow while demonstrating the proper technique for… well, for not doing that, apparently. A few éclairs had made a valiant attempt at flight, only to land with a soft plop on the pristine white tablecloth.

“Robert!” Linda’s voice, though hushed, managed to cut through the general hubbub. It wasn’t the sharp reprimand of their early days, but a weary, fond exasperation.
