Chapter 4
The Doppelganger's Game
Rose's suspicion solidifies into a terrifying certainty: the woman she welcomed into her home is a doppelganger. The initial confusion turns to fear as she understands the true danger lurking within her house.
The late afternoon sun, a bruised orange bleeding into twilight, cast long, skeletal shadows across the manicured lawn as Rose pulled the car to a halt in front of the school. Their mother, their Pastora Lei, was thousands of miles away in Indonesia, and they were adrift, their anchor lifted.
“Are you two alright?” Rose asked softly, her voice a gentle balm against the unspoken anxieties that hung between them.
Hezekiah, his eyes wide and reflecting the fading light, offered a small, hesitant nod. JJ, ever the more stoic of the two, simply stared out the window, his gaze fixed on the passing streetlights that began to bloom like pale, artificial flowers.
