The sun, a benevolent eye in the vast Ugandan sky, warmed the dusty path beneath Amina and Kato’s worn sandals. Behind them, Nalongo’s gentle footsteps were a familiar rhythm, a comforting presence as they ventured deeper into the land. The map, unfolded and creased between Amina’s fingers, led them not through bustling markets or vibrant green fields, but towards a quiet, almost melancholic whisper of water. The ‘Silent River’ the map had promised, was in sight.
As they neared, the air grew cooler, carrying with it the scent of damp earth and something else… a faint, sad aroma of what once was. The river, where the map depicted a lively, flowing ribbon of life, was now a timid trickle, its banks wide and parched, littered with smooth, grey stones that spoke of a time when water had rushed over them with boisterous joy. Tall reeds, once lush and green, drooped as if in mourning, their tips brittle and brown.
Kato, ever the first to voice his feelings, kicked a loose pebble. “It’s… sad, Amina. Where did all the water go?” His usual boundless energy seemed to dim, mirroring the river’s desolation.
