And there she was, bathed in the harsh glare of the forensic lights, a silhouette against the chaos. Liana. Her usually vibrant eyes, now wide and haunted, were fixed on the floor. In her trembling hand, clutched with a white-knuckled grip, was a knife. Not just any knife. The knife. The one glinting with the tell-tale crimson of the victim.

“Liana?” The name was a whisper, torn from his lungs. It was a ghost from his past, a specter he’d thought long buried. His former informant. The one who had navigated the city’s underbelly for him, a whisper in the shadows, a ghost in the machine. Now, here she was, standing in the epicenter of a homicide, the instrument of demise in her grasp.

Her head snapped up, her gaze meeting his. A flicker of something – fear? Recognition? – crossed her face before it shuttered, replaced by a mask of carefully constructed composure. “Coley,” she acknowledged, her voice a low tremor.
