The weight of the locket against Elara’s skin was a constant, comforting presence, a silken whisper against her collarbone. It had been three days since she’d found it tucked away in the velvet lining of her grandmother’s old jewelry box, three days of its subtle hum resonating deep within her bones. Sleep had become a peculiar landscape, a tapestry woven with fragmented images and emotions that felt both foreign and achingly familiar.

Last night, the dreams had been particularly vivid. She saw a woman, her face a blur of moonlight and shadow, her hands tracing patterns in the air that bloomed into ethereal light. The woman wore a gown the color of twilight, and around her neck, glinting with an inner fire, was a locket identical to the one Elara now possessed. A warmth spread through Elara’s dream-self, a sense of profound connection, as if she were looking into a mirror held across centuries. Then, a chill, sharp and alien, snaked through the dream, and the light flickered, the woman’s face contorting in a silent scream before the image dissolved into the inky blackness that always preceded waking.

Elara sat by her window, tracing the intricate silver swirls of the locket with a trembling finger. The morning sun, still shy behind a veil of mist, cast a pale glow on its surface, making the tiny, almost imperceptible etchings seem to writhe. She felt a pull, a yearning, to understand the woman in her dreams, to decipher the meaning behind the fleeting visions.
