The cobbled alleyway reeked of stale beer and desperation, a familiar symphony that played on repeat in this forgotten corner of the city. Henry pulled the collar of his jacket tighter, the damp chill seeping into his bones. He’d followed the faint trail of breadcrumbs – a hushed conversation overheard in a smoky bar, a scribbled address on a forgotten napkin, a name whispered by a nervous contact – all leading him to this grimy labyrinth. His parents, he suspected, had navigated these shadowed paths more often than he cared to imagine.

A figure detached itself from the deeper gloom of a doorway, silhouetted against the weak glow of a distant streetlamp. Too tall, too broad to be a casual passerby. Another emerged from the opposite side, mirroring the first. They moved with a casual, almost languid grace that belied a coiled tension, like predators testing the wind.
