Confronting Elias Thorne again, Henry presents the key. Thorne, seeing the locket's key, finally breaks, revealing his complicity and the true nature of his parents' business and the threat they faced.
The air in Elias Thorne’s cramped apartment was thick with the cloying scent of stale tobacco and desperation. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of weak afternoon light that pierced the grimy window, illuminating a scene of quiet decay. Henry stood just inside the doorway, the weight of his mother’s locket heavy in his palm, its intricate silver filigree cool against his skin. He’d found Thorne nursing a lukewarm drink, his usual guardedness replaced by a weary resignation that pricked at Henry’s resolve.
“You’re back,” Thorne rasped, not bothering to look up from the chipped mug cradled in his hands. His eyes, sunken and shadowed, flicked toward Henry’s face for a fleeting second before returning to the dark liquid.
“I have something for you,” Henry said, his voice steady despite the tremor that threatened to betray him. He stepped further into the room, the floorboards groaning a protest beneath his weight. He held out the locket, its chain glinting dully. “This. You know what it means, don’t you?”
