Chapter 5
Enigmatic Silas
Anya's search leads her to Silas, a man living on the city's fringes. He is hesitant but recognizes the scroll and Anya's earnest spirit.
Anya’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The scroll, clutched tight in her hand, felt both a comfort and a burden. Its whispered promises of hope had led her away from the familiar chaos of the Agora, down narrow, winding alleys where the scent of brine and drying fish gave way to something earthier, something wilder. The sun, so bold and bright in the open square, now dappled through thick vines and cast long, dancing shadows that played tricks on her eyes. She was searching for a man named Silas, a name etched in faded ink on the scroll’s brittle edge, a name that felt as ancient and mysterious as the words themselves.
The marketplace guards, with their polished bronze helmets and bored stares, had been easy enough to evade. Lyra, the fruit vendor with eyes like sharp pebbles, had been a different story. Anya had nearly bartered her last sweet fig for a scrap of information, but Lyra’s greedy gaze had flickered too often towards the bulge of the scroll hidden beneath Anya’s tunic. It was Silas’s name, whispered by a frightened street urchin Anya had shared her fig with, that had truly set her on this path. “Silas,” the boy had rasped, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and reverence, “He lives out by the old potter’s sheds, beyond the city walls. They say he… he sees things.”
Anya paused, taking a deep breath. The air here was cooler, cleaner. She could hear the distant bleating of goats and the rustle of unseen creatures in the overgrown thickets. Was this the edge of the world? She’d always imagined the source of such profound words to be grand and imposing, perhaps a towering temple or a sun-drenched villa. Not a place that felt so… forgotten.
