The sun, a benevolent eye in a sky scrubbed clean of the grime that had once clung to our world, found us sitting on a porch swing, the gentle creak a familiar rhythm against the hum of a quiet afternoon. Years. It had been years since the alleyways had been our only roof, since the gnawing hunger had been our constant companion, since the hollow ache of fear had been our lullaby. Akari, her hair now a cascade of warm chestnut, a stark contrast to the matted, tangled mess it once was, leaned her head against my shoulder. Her eyes, once sharp with the desperate vigilance of survival, now held a soft, contented glow.

“Remember that dumpster behind the bakery, Akari?” I asked, the memory a phantom limb, a distant ache that no longer defined me. “The one with the slightly stale croissants we used to fight over?”

She chuckled, a sound like wind chimes after a storm. “Fight over? You mean the one you’d scarf down before I even got a bite, you little thief?”
