The city breathed around us, a stale, grimy exhalation of exhaust fumes and desperation. Tennessee’s voice, a rustle of ancient parchment in my mind, had been our only compass for days. “The Labyrinth,” he’d whispered, his spectral form shimmering at the edge of my vision, “where the veil thins, and the artifact sings.” He’d pointed us towards a part of the city we usually avoided, a forgotten warren of alleys and forgotten buildings, a place where the shadows clung like a second skin.

Akari clutched my arm, her knuckles white. “AJ, this feels wrong. Every instinct is screaming at me to turn back.” Her eyes, usually sharp and observant, were wide with a fear I recognized. It was the same fear that gnawed at me when the withdrawal sickness hit, the cold dread of losing control.

“We have to, Akari,” I countered, my own voice a little too tight. “Tennessee wouldn’t send us here unless it was important. This artifact… it’s our only shot.” I squeezed her arm, a silent promise. *I’ll keep you safe.* The words felt hollow, even to me. My past was a tangled mess of mistakes, and the thought that I might be leading Akari into something even worse twisted my gut.
