Chapter 11
Ramiro's Dilemma
Akari’s boyfriend, Ramiro, a resourceful immigrant, fears her family’s judgment. He is unaware of the true danger they face, his own secret a vulnerability that could impact their fragile alliance as Akari leans on him.
Ramiro traced the condensation ring his beer bottle left on the grimy bar counter, a nervous habit he’d picked up since meeting Akari. It was a small, dark place, the kind that smelled of stale beer and desperation, a familiar scent to him, but one he desperately wanted to shield Akari from. He’d seen the way her eyes sometimes flickered with a longing for something cleaner, something brighter, and it twisted something deep inside him. The thought of her family’s reaction, if they ever found out, was enough to make his palms sweat. AJ, her brother, already viewed him with a suspicion that was almost palpable. Akari, bless her pragmatic heart, seemed to see past it, but Ramiro knew he was walking a tightrope. One wrong step, one misplaced word, and he could lose her, and losing her… well, that was a chasm he couldn’t even begin to contemplate.
“Another?” The bartender, a man whose face seemed permanently etched with a grimace, slid a fresh beer towards him.
