The city breathed around Anya, a symphony of distant sirens and the low hum of a million lives lived in the shadows. She huddled deeper into the worn fabric of her jacket, the chill of the alley seeping into her bones. Each passing car, each flicker of neon, felt like a potential threat, a reminder of the unseen eyes that watched her. Silas and his whispers were a constant presence, a cold dread that coiled in her stomach. She clutched the small, smooth stone in her pocket, its faint warmth a small comfort against the encroaching darkness. It felt alive, somehow, a tiny ember of a forgotten power.
Suddenly, a voice, soft as falling snow yet carrying an impossible weight, cut through the urban cacophony. "They are closer than you think, child of the forgotten."
Anya’s head snapped up, her striking blue eyes scanning the limited view of the alleyway. There was no one. The voice seemed to emanate from the very air, a disembodied whisper that prickled the hairs on her arms. "Who's there?" she managed, her voice a ragged breath.
